Subduction is a dreamy, downtempo, female vocal driven, latin and jazz infused album.
"... made from the torn pages of various pulp detective mysteries and dimestore romance novels, their pages ripped out and recombined together into a new order by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dido, and Fiona Apple. The three are in the lounge car of a sleek underground train running an endless journey from New York to Brazil, where it will never arrive. A mixture of soothing post coital bliss and dangerous interpersonal complexities hovers around them, as inescapable as the ceaseless percussive drumming of the other, mostly hidden, passengers also in the car, as they continue piling dusty page upon dusty page, searching for the exact order that will tell them how to leave this train they have been trapped on for years."
The album features lush, alto, female vocals, performed by Milena Jelic, latin and jazz brushstrokes, and a downtempo feel sultry, flirtatious, percussive, and melancholic. All songs are written and produced by Paul Shapera, except for You Are One, where the vocal line was both written and improvised by Milena, before I chopped up and arranged it over the beat.
I've included 3 excerpts which change every so often according to what i feel best represents the album at the time.
